Here’s an interesting street-art project on “street harassment” called ‘Stop Telling Women to Smile’ by Brooklyn artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. There has always been stories from women on how men or even other women have given unwanted attention. Sometimes individuals have a sense of entitlement when it comes to talking to you when you’re out and minding your own business. Some people don’t get that it’s a thin line between interacting with your fellow man(woman) and forcing yourself into their world. However, I also believe that we’re in a time-period where social interaction is pushed, but human interaction is awkward and frowned upon. There must be a balance between embracing human interaction and not overstepping one’s bounds when seeking human interaction- this topic may be discussed in a future blog. Nonetheless, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh’s artwork is important dialogue because there is definitely an issue with “street harassment” or unwarranted advances being thrown at uninterested women. I really don’t remember how I came across ‘CREATE.TURE’ by Michelle Robinson, maybe one of my friends liked her artwork on Facebook or through some random late-night google search. But it really doesn’t matter how I got there, just as long as I did indeed get there. To call her work amazing would be an understatement. She transforms artwork from canvass to clothing and back again.
